The following data sets are here to help test the Wildlife Crossing Calculator (WCC). These two datasets are from the San Diego region in southern California, and include both a highways dataset and a WVC dataset. Users of this tool are welcome to download these data and use them to test out the system and learn its capabilities.
We also suggest using these data as models to help prepare your own data sets for upload to WCC.
Dataset Highways / Roads
These data come from the National Highway Planning Network (NHPN) and clipped for the San Diego region. They also have their roads split at 1 mile segments; segmenting highways/roads is a requirement for this tool so that incidents can be associated with a single segment and analyzed with respect to other nearby segments.
Note that you can upload local roads (they don't need to be federal or state highways), and the segmenting can be less than 1 mile, although the analysis may take longer.
Dataset Crashes / Incidents
These data come from the California Highway Incident Processing System (CHIPS) and represent five years of data in that region. These data have been encoded with the crash severity and the wildlife names match the default set for California.
Again, these data can be used as a model to configure your own data for upload to the tool.
